Recreational water illnesses are diseases that people can get from the water in which they swim and play, like swimming pools, hot tubs etc. When they swallow, have contact with, or breathe in mists or aerosols from swimming water containing germs (like bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa).
RWIs can also be caused by chemicals in the water or chemicals that turn into gas in the air like chloramines and cause air quality problems at indoor (and outdoor!) aquatic facilities.
Knowing the basic facts about RWIs can make the difference between an enjoyable time at the pool, beach, or waterpark, and getting a rash, having diarrhea, or developing other, potentially serious illnesses.
The condition of swimming and bathing pool water must by law be such that it does not constitute a risk to human health.
